Description

This salmon metal wall art was inspired by the ocean stage of the adult coho or silver salmon’s life cycle.

It depicts the pull of the moon, the cycle of day and night, the sun, the stars, and the phases of the moon. And the life of salmon in the ebb and flow of the open ocean; between the tides and the salmon’s imminent return to the headwaters from whence they came.

I made the engraved and heat-colored metal wall art using decorative techniques I’ve been developing for the last 30 years. After enlarging the drawing onto plasma cut 14 gauge steel, I engrave it into the metal using a pneumatic engraver and grinding burrs.

I then use a variety of abrasives to grind the surface of the wall panel to create grinding patterns and textures, suggest the forms and movement, and the overall feeling I want to capture. The result is akin to a metal art painting.

‘Between the Tides’ is available in a limited edition of seven. I made the first wall panel in the limited edition for the Best Western Bidarka Inn of Homer, Alaska, where it greets visitors from behind the reception desk.

You can special order your version of this salmon metal wall art specially sized to fit your space. If you prefer, I can make it a wall sculpture with multiple layers of heat-colored metal and wood. If you have a salmon fishing business, I can incorporate it into a metal sign for you.

If you’re looking for a coffee table, I can make it as an engraved steel top for a decorative coffee table. You can see an example of a decorative oval table in the one I made for Bear Trail Lodge. It shows a brown bear walking dreamily along the banks of a river after a long day of salmon fishing. It’s enjoyed by the visitors and staff of the Lodge.

If you’re on a budget, or your design plans don’t require a piece of original metal art, it’s available as a creative edge art print on aluminum. The metal photo print is cut to the same shape as the original fish art.

If you’re looking for unique wall decor, you’ll find a variety of metal wall decor and fishing decor in both our online gallery and our sculpture portfolio. Some of these are sizeable focal point pieces depicting black or brown bears who are salmon fishing.

One of these, ‘Seasons of the Sockeye’, illustrates the complete life cycle of sockeye salmon. The cottonwood and steel salmon stream is the centerpiece metal wall art in the main entrance to the River Tower at Central Peninsula Hospital in Soldotna, Alaska.
