Besides the little clay sculpture of a baseball player I remember making in nursery school, and a paper mache whooping crane I made in 3rd grade, wood was my first medium of sculpture. My father brought a couple of small whittled animals back from a research trip in the Brooks Range when I was quite young. These were quite an inspiration for me and I still have one, a three piece carving of a loon.

In high school, I carried a small leather pouch and pocket knife and whittled small figures isnpired by Tolkien’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ in my free time.
