Here are some examples of recent work. I have been focusing on building our place here in Homer for several years. A few of these pieces were finished in 2001 or earlier. You can see the wide range of my sculpture in the Portfolio on this website.

Salmon Stream Table
Lifecycle in salmon stream. Engraved steel with heat colors on cherry table.
Commissioned in 2003 by a friend in Fairbanks, this table began with two flitch cut cherry boards cut on the jig I had built for a Woodmizer bandsaw mill. It makes it possible to swivel a log with a fork or long curve so as to always keep it within the throat of the saw. See: Sawiing Curved Logs.

When we were young, growing up in Fairbanks, Alaska, we used to collect prehistoric bones along the banks of Gold Stream in the valley behind the hill where we lived.
The inspiration for this small bronze sculpture came from a fragment of a mammoth pelvic bone found elsewhere in Alaska.
With the addition of an alabaster orb, it recalls the primordial memories of a pale moon rising across our doorsteps. : ) , It could make a good monumental sculpture as well. “Mammoth proportions”

Upright Sleeping Baby Dragon
The dragon appears to be sleeping but, we know better. I made this version in bronze after making a stone carving for a relative to hold a 4″ crystal ball. Baby Dragon with Crystal Ball
It is also available without a base, and with it’s one watchful eye, it can make a good dressing table “guardian” for your own jewel collection. Sleeping Baby Dragon

First-Arctic Sun
With all the waning light of noonday dawn,The day will end before its yet begun,
And dark and broad the wind will range and howl,
Yet never wrest the sleep from bear below.
Her driftworn tracks no longer share their lore,
Faint breaths now rise but soon will glaze the floor,
And deep in heavy slumber she is borne,
To places only yesterdays have been.
Through dreamlike icy barrens all alone,
She paces winter’s heartbeats with her own,
And when the season’s song is fully sung,
She’ll rise to greet the year’s First Arctic Sun.
.
This interior Alaska white spruce carving has been weathered over time and oiled to depict a lone polar bear basking in the first faint rays of the arctic spring’s sunshine. This 6.5’ sculpture was carved in Fairbanks in 2001 alongside another: Polar Bear Sniffing at the Wind.
It reminds us of the fresh outlook spring carries with it and the fragile future this welcome sunshine brings to a warming arctic.

Denali Table
Growing up in Fairbanks, Alaska, I spent a week each summer at Camp Denali visiting my friend Romany Wood. Camp Denali was then owned by our neighbors Ginny Wood and Celia Hunter. My father also spent many summers in Denali Park studying grizzly bears. I love the braided rivers and mountains and the chance to see the wild animals up close.
When I had a chance to do an engraved steel table for some folks in Fairbanks, I drew this design. The texture and direction of the marks from the various grinding tools catch the light in different ways. As you walk around the table, the light is reflected from constantly changing angles. On the mountains, the grinding marks are made in different directions depending on the angle of each face of the mountain. In this way, the reflections give the effect of three dimensions.Engraved Steel with Heat Tints
