Basking Stone Frog

Frank Lloyd Wright Portrait
This was first version made while doing a commissioned portrait for Triton College in Wheaton, IL while I was at the Naguib School of Sculpture in 1981. The college commissioned several students to do portraits of famous people. Wright’s signature was a red square, hence the redwood base. I made a different version that went to the college.
Modeled life-size. Finished sculpture is slightly smaller.

Mountain Mason
I made this garden stone carving in 1994 as a trade to a dentist. As with many carvings, the idea came from the shape of the rough block of stone. I started the process and left the rest to the mountain mason.

Reawakening the Muse
Sometimes the inner fires dwindle and we are out of touch with our creative genius. This small bronze sculpture can remind us of the inspiration lurking within.

Stone Portrait
In 1991 I was asked to carve a stone portrait of the owner of a Kentucky coal mine. He came to North Carolina and I made a clay sketch from life and took photographs to work from. It is carved life-sized in Black Alberene soapstone from Schuyler, VA.
Below are photos of the carving process.

Alligator in Swamp
This Black Alberene soapstone carving of an alligator was a commission for the University of Florida I made in 1998.
I had a slab of a cypress tree that was perfect for the base. The holes were filled with black expansion cement giving the feeling of bubbles in a murky swamp. I felt like mounting it on the wall as the effect would have been an underwater view of the alligator swimming towards you. It was very heavy and ended up as a table top piece. It was stolen not long after it was delivered to the school.
Ages had gone by
This stone carving started as many do with an idea coming from the natural shape of the block of stone. The story which is carved around the base developed as the carving took shape.
The text reads: Ages had gone by, a pale moon cast craggy shadows. Mother held the broken shell in wonder. Baby, who had never seen a dragon before, peered cautiously from behind a rock.
