Clay Animals - Step by Step

This easy-to-lead clay modeling lesson gives students experience following along with step-by-step instructions. It helps develop planning skills and teaches basic clay modeling methods.

There is a sense of mystery, as they do not know what they are making when they begin. Soon, as the clay takes shape, they see they have the beginnings of an animal form.

As they continue, each student’s animal will develop into a unique character.

1. Students will get an introduction to working with water-based clay.
2. They will learn about using water to keep the clay workable but not too wet.
3. They will learn about following a progressive sequence of steps while making a sculpture.
4. The modeling exercise introduces them to proportion and how, through careful planning, they can allot the required amount of clay for each part of their sculpture from within their ball of clay.
5. As the animal becomes more defined, they will learn about the character, gesture, proportion, and unique qualities of the animal they have chosen for their sculpture.

Each step is illustrated with a photo and description, making it easy to lead the children through the lesson.
