This engraved steel saw blade is colored with heat colors. It was made for Shoun Lumber in Butler, TN and depicts three generations of owners and the technological growth of the sawmill.

It’s decorated the office wall since the early 90’s.

This was one of the first examples of the metal wall art I’ve been making since the early ’90s.

In the Studio - How the Artwork Was Made

The engraving process. — The engraving process includes drawing the design with cut off wheels and carbide or diamond burrs. Then rubber abrasives and sanding or grinding tools are used to grind throught the dark rusted surface to expose areas for the oxidation colors or heat colors. This is done in succession, working from areas that get the hottest colors first and then moving to cooler and cooler colors. Finally, the whites or “silver” areas and hightlights are ground.

Applying heat to color the bare metal. — A large propane torch is used to evenly heat the blade and bring it up to the temperature needed to create the desired oxidation color or heat color.
